The Bible comprehends wealth as a form of power, one that is alluring and enslaving. Since economic growth requires a relentless expansion and intensification of material desires, the commodification of social life is ultimately a path toward self-destruction as our once-bountiful planet is “consumed.” We are possessed by our possessions — and the only remedy for such a spiritual “possession” is exorcism.
